KOKOMAN at Random Chat
Posted by RedSoxFaithful (Grand Broheim) at Jan 7 2011, 10:11 AM. 46 comments
Bros:
So I know we all joke around about how much of a fuckup Koko is at posting messages on a message board, but I know even better that most of us are not really joking. And, furthermore, I know that in recent weeks, Koko's posting has gotten worse. He seems to be alternating between "idiot troll" and "smug nutcase", all the while posting 20 times a day about everything he can possibly think of.
Now: I've been considering in recent weeks a full ban of Koko. This is not new; it's something I suggested before he even joined. But, frankly, I've been drifting towards more totalitarian forum policies here recently, and it's becoming clear that any sort of "better Koko" that we've been trying to provoke does not exist. He has had his chances to listen to the flames (and I said from day one that I wanted this forum to police itself through flames), and he has not shown any indication of a willingness to do so.
I count maybe two people who don't vehemently hate Koko here, and I did privately contact one of them to get his thoughts on the matter. He told me that he couldn't blame me for taking action against Koko, but also offered a couple of alternatives to a full ban. (All of those alternatives did admittedly involve privately reasoning with Koko, which I have not and do not plan to do.) I did choose to take one of those alternatives this morning, after seeing Koko's most recent posts in Random Chat.
Going forward, I've limited Koko's permissions so that he can only post in this forum and in Videogame Discussion. He can still view and read all other fora. Videogame Discussion is the one forum where he seems to stay on-topic and useful, and where people actually seem to enjoy talking to him. I chose to do this and not completely ban him because I recognize that many of you do play LoL or SC2 with him, and I'd rather not cost the rest of the community by removing his play from it.
Feel free to discuss this decision here, but it should be noted that barring a total community outcry, it's final. And a note to Koko: Don't bother posting in this thread. Your posts here will be deleted.
Sorry to all the bros for this overly long message, but man, I've had enough.

Winter Board Updates
Posted by RedSoxFaithful (Grand Broheim) at Dec 14 2010, 12:20 AM. 34 comments
Well, I rolled out a few updates on the board. Some are noticeable; some are not.
The big change is the skin. I got a little tired of the old one, and decided to look for some new options while remaining true to some sort of clean, black/white color scheme. I found this and tried it out, and I think it works pretty nicely. If you really prefer the old option, it's available in the drop down menu at the bottom of any forum page. However, because of the other changes I made, I'm going to be removing that option from the board in the next month or so, so I encourage you to embrace the new theme.
I also decided to move away from the "DARC was the dawn" tagline. It's pretty clear at this point that DA isn't coming back, and as far as I know, 95% of our community doesn't play DotA anymore, anyway. It makes more sense to create an individualized "Random Chat" that's separate of any connections to DotA going forward. I went with "Long Live Random Chat!" for the new forum name, though I'm not really terribly indebted to it. If you have suggestions that don't suck, let me know. I should note that, for the foreseeable future, the site's URL will still be darcwasthedawn.com. This won't change until it's time to renew that domain, at which point I'll be switching to something else.
Other things: I decided to diversify the forums a bit more. I added forums for sports and videogame discussion, and a music subforum for MP3 uploads/downloads. I think the videogame and download forums will prove active and useful, if past activity is any indication. I am less sold on the need for a sports forum, though I'm considering the next month or so a test run for the idea. I did go through the entirety of Random Chat, and I moved all appropriate threads to their respective forums. Let me know if you catch one that I missed!
I can't really think of much else to mention here, but I'm happy to say that our forum has been going strong for almost 5 months now. The activity is still great, and I'm excited to see what's to come for us heading into 2011. Thanks for reading, and let me know if you have any questions or comments on any changes.

1.) Really pleased by all the activity so quickly. Expansion seems to be going well, and we're getting a lot of good conversation! It's odd, because we seem to be more active than RC was towards the end, but I'll take it. I thought to myself when I created this, "Man, I guess we'll see what happens when we give a forum based around trolling absolute freedom," but it hasn't been like that at all. It's amazing what happens when you get people together who actually sort of like each other!
2.) I've merged sports with RC, but I am hopeful that the TV/Movies forum will prove to be necessary. For now, I'm going to stick with those two specialty forums, alongside the generic catch-all forum.
3.) More great news to report: Pendragon has agreed to put a notice in RC that we've moved here. This means that our traffic should only increase as the DA Archives are set up, and that we should be prepared for some unfamiliar faces to join. I hope we can welcome such users in and be flaming them like best bros in no time.
4.) What do you guys think about some incorporation with videogames somewhere? I was thinking about adding a profile field for Gamertags or PSN account names. Would you guys use that at all? Might be cool to play together outside of DotA, or even if you want to organize a RC DotA tourney. Let me know!

Man, we need to get the word out

Hello once again bros!
well actually, singular bro. It's sort of just me and you right now, icehsm. BUT THAT CAN CHANGE! We need to figure out a way to lasso up everyone and GET. THEM. HERE. That can be tricky without attracting kidnapping charges though, so we're going to have to be CREATIVE.
I sent out invites to a few people, and you can too! This is a non-invasive way to make people know about our community, and WAY EASIER than abducting them and telling them about it. WIN-WIN, I KNOW. Anyway, so as more people join and read this: CONTINUE TO SEND OUT INVITES! Let's see who comes, etc, etc, that's what she said, etc

Welcome to DARC was the dawn

So as everybody here should know, DotA-Allstars.com is no more. We all went to PlayDota for a while, but man, that site is just clown shoes. Just absolute clown shoes. Plus Koko knows about it, so there's that.
ANYWAY. Me and Spootnic were talking about moving to another RC-clusive forum. This is the result of that talk. I don't know what to expect from this, since really there were only ~20 active bros in RC, but I tidied it up and tried to make it functional.
LET'S SEE WHERE IT TAKES US. If you have any questions or comments or ideas whatever, post 'em here. I'll try to maintain this place as best I can, but I doubt I'll really moderate anything. Just no pr0n, obviously.
